So I started with a red velvet cake mix, tinted with extra red food coloring for that extra 'oomph'.
After the cake was baked, crumbled, cooled, and frosting added, I began to make shapes that roughly resembled skulls.
Can you see the skulls here?
I actually had fun sculpting each little head. They each had their own unique personality, and I hadn't even begun to decorate them yet!
After shaping, I placed them in a refrigerator for a few hours.
Here are the gang after dipping in white candy coating.
Skulls were so dang easy to make. All the features are drawn on with a black edible ink pen. It was fun!
After awhile, I became bored with drawing just a basic skull face, so I got creative and began drawing expressions on them. The shape of the skull reminded me of "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, so
I tried to emulate it on the cake pop.
These guys look afraid of the ones on the left!
Still with my creative juices flowing, I thought I could make pirate skull cake pops out of half of these. An easy dip in red candy coating, and you've got an instant scarf!
On some I added texture with extra coating, using a toothpick. I used a red candy heart on one side to represent a knot. On the other side, near where an ear would be (they're skulls- no ears!), I used a little melted candy coating to glue a yellow star to simulate an earring.
I love how one of these looks terrified of the others.
The gang's all here! Skull pops, and pirate skull pops.
I uploaded some of the photos of this project to Facebook, and I was asked, "Who's In These Photos?", with the skull faces outlined. Gotta love technology!
This is one of my favorite shots from this cake pop project. There's something really satisfying about biting into a skull and seeing RED! Muhahahahahaha!
