The photos in this post are of my first attempt at making cake pops. I wanted to make Easter Egg cake pops. In Bakerella’s book, they look so cute, and so easy to make. I failed miserably. (Please note that ALL the photos on this blog, including the background images on the site, are of my own creations. Making cake pops does get easier the more you do it!)
How did I go wrong? I mean, I followed Bakerella’s instructions exactly! She takes a cake, crumbles it, puts a tub of frosting in it, and makes adorable cake pops! I do the same thing, and I end up with mushy, ugly, awful-tasting lumpy cake meal on a stick. They even kept falling off the stick when I tried to dip them. Yuck.
So for the few pops that actually stayed on the stick, I tried dipping them in white candy coating. My candy coating was thick and lumpy, and made my Egg Pops look more like large marshmallows on sticks. I was so frustrated that I cried over it. I tried to be optimistic, and pulled out a few cans of spray food coloring (I use Color Mist). I sprayed the pops with color to make them look more Easter-like. It worked!
But the cake pops tasted so bad that I wouldn’t even offer them to my 3 year old. The texture was mealy and mushy. I ended my first 3-hour journey into Pop-ville, and threw all of my creations in the trash.
I was ready to give up on Cake Pops altogether. But something inside me kept telling me to try again. At night I would lay awake trying to figure out what went wrong. It had to be something I missed. So I began researching, and I decided to try making cake pops just once more. If I failed again, I would just give up entirely. But if I succeeded…. well, keep reading!
